The Shameless Audacity of Asking

Do you have shameless audacity?

What’s holding you back from writing?

Or, perhaps the better question is, what’s holding you back from publishing?

Surely not a lack of ideas. We writers can always find a trove of subjects to write about. We have plenty of intriguing observations and personal stories and excursions of the imaginative mind that we can describe in vivid and eloquent detail. So if not lack of material . . .

Perhaps it’s a lack of shameless audacity.

It takes a certain level of moxie to write something and publish it. It really does. Writing is so personal. Whether it’s a corporate white paper or a romance novel, it’s still personal for the writer. It still takes nerve – shameless audacity – to put those words forth for others to read. Credibility is always at stake. Publishing can bring on a bad case of Imposter Syndrome. The writer’s life is a vulnerable way to live … voluntarily.

Because people won’t always get it. They won’t always get you. They won’t always agree with what you’ve said. And some of them will get pretty ugly about it. Insulting. Or condescending. Downright mean.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t write. Because, somewhere, there’s an audience for your words. You need only keep writing and you will find them.

Publishing is having the audacity to ask. Ask someone to listen. Ask someone to consider. Ask someone to follow you with their support. Ask someone to give you just a moment to state your case. Or tell your story.

Ask someone to believe you have something valuable to say and invest a little time in finding out what it is.

Why Writers Should Have Shameless Audacity

We writers write because we have to. But what good is it if we don’t publish? We no longer have to wait for approval or selection or even permission. Getting published doesn’t have to be political. Nor elite. Good, bad, or indifferent, self-publishing has opened a new door … to audacity! And there’s no time like the present.

So go ahead. Develop some shameless audacity. Ask.

“I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.” –Luke 11:8
